1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth PSA 2 to PSA 4.5
Alteration types: Chemically treated (causing significant ink loss)
Sold on 11/22/2017 as a PSA 2 by Mile High Card Company to an unknown buyer for $2,523.56
Consigned to PWCC and sold on 5/9/2018 as a PSA 4.5 for $5,100.00
Final price: $5,100.00
Value gain: $2,576.44!
This card was sent to me by BO member SetBuilder. He looked in the same PSA order where the E93 Wagner (Post #3488), the D304 Cobb (Post #3511), and the T213-3 Mathewson (Post #3617), were all found. This Ruth was also altered.
The Mile High description of the PSA 2 Ruth states that the card has "barely detectable paper loss and glue residue on the reverse." There is no mention of the paper loss or glue in the PWCC decription of the PSA 4.5. However, it is clear that the card was treated with some sort of caustic chemicals (probably to brighten it and especially to remove the glue residue). Look at the words "RUTH", "GOUDEY", and the "STON" in Boston on the reverse. Much of the original green ink has been destroyed by the card doctor's cleaning process.
Blue circles on the front show common print flaws between the two cards. Red boxes on the back show where the green ink has been altered by the chemicals. If Mile High Card Co. would be willing to provide Blowout detectives with the name of the winner of this auction, it would go a long way in determining who the card doctor is.
