This card was once amateurishly recolored on its right border by an earlier card doctor, which is why PSA gave it the MK, or mark designation. In fact, PSA should not have given it a 1-10 grade at all. By their own standards, it should have been slabbed Authentic-Altered. It is puzzling to me why this occurred.
The card doctor who bought the card from Memory Lane in a PSA 5 MK holder removed the amateurish black color, which can be seen in the red boxes. However, in an attempt to improve the look of the black borders, the doctor then trimmed/shaved the left edge, resulting in a front left and back right border with significantly less areas of brown wear showing under the black surface color (highlighted in blue).
So, in sum, the PWCC card doctor eliminated bad, older doctoring, and added newer, less-detectable doctoring. PSA butchered the grade of this card twice: first by giving a clearly altered card a numerical grade, and second by grading a twice-altered card a PSA 4. All this work for a $16 gain. Thanks to the anonymous e-mail tip that led to this card.
