11/21/2023 Patch authenticity disputed. An earlier image reportedly shows 44/99 with a plain white patch, while the current BGS 9 card contains a multicolor patch. Upper Deck issued a 2019 letter concluding that the card was authentic and describing it as a factory replacement for a damaged original. Federal court records later noted that the letter authenticated the card but did not expressly authenticate the embedded patch. Goldin Auctions withdrew the card from a June 2021 auction after bidding reached $690,000 because of authenticity concerns. The owners subsequently sued Goldin. The litigation remains centered on Goldin’s decision to withdraw the card and conflicting interpretations of Upper Deck’s records; no court ruling located has determined that the patch was either authentic or altered.
