Prior Grade: SGC 3 cert# 1261191-036
Card: 1911 D304 Brunners Bread, Ty Cobb.
Alterations: Cleaned, crease pressed out, provenance erased.
Yellow circles are the common print marks/flaws between both cards.

This newest altered D304 Cobb was once part of hobby pioneer Lionel Carter's collection. Many collectors enjoy looking for and buying cards once owned by old-timers like Carter. While the price premium for these cards is usually negligible or non-existent, it is one of the few cards left where the provenance can be traced back to the original owner. A comforting thought in today's fraud-ridden environment. Why didn't PWCC preserve the provenance? Because a tiny crease was in the way of a potential profit, and crossing over the card to PSA or making them aware of Carter's provenance would have exposed their secret: the crease had been removed. It is apparent from the scan that the card was also lightly cleaned, as some of the dark spots visible on the back in the pre-alteration scan do not appear in the post-alteration scan. One of the many wonderful things Brentsy & Friends are doing for the hobby.
Sold by Robert Edward Auctions (as an SGC 40/3) on April 25, 2015 for $9,000 to an unknown buyer.
Description: "A very faint surface crease near the end of Cobb's bat is responsible for the card not receiving a higher grade. This flaw does not break through to the back, and even with it, we would grade the card slightly higher than SGC."
Then sold by PWCC (as a PSA 4.5) on December 6, 2015 for $13,651.11.
Description: "Even corner wear appears to be all that downgrades; an otherwise crease-free and clean state of preservation.
Gain: $4,651.11
